Highlights

Fiji Day

National Fiji Day occurs on October 10 every year to commemorate the day when Fiji gained political independence from Great Britain in 1970. There is a new theme every year to organise festive events, which traditionally involves religious and cultural ceremonies. Most resorts also offer special events and celebrations if your stay falls on this holiday.

Diwali Festival

Diwali is a prominent Hindu festival, dedicated to the victory of light over darkness, hence the attribution Festival of Lights. Celebratory customs involve adorning houses, temples and other buildings in Fiji with thousands of lights. Candles, oil lamps, lanterns and fireworks are also heavily prevalent during the festival period.

National Sports Day

Established in 2014, this holiday recognises the contribution of sport towards Fiji’s national development and honours the country’s sporting heroes. Fiji’s most popular sport is rugby union, however football (soccer), golf, cricket, surfing, sailing and boxing are also popular. Expect a variety of activities and events organised for the day, in an effort to encourage national participation from all ages, genders and races through sports across all sectors in society.
