Motoring at Your Own Pace in Fiji

A valid driver’s license or international driving permit (and credit card) from any country is your passport to explore Fiji behind the wheel. A mixed blessing, rental vehicles give you independence to come and go as you like, but you need to take care to avoid unusual hazards travelling island towns or countryside, whether in a car, SUV, campervan, motorbike or scooter.

Road Rules & Essential Information

Driving on the sealed coastal road of Viti Levu is relatively easy and smooth however, if you plan to explore off the beaten path, it gets a bit challenging. There are no big green signs, just tiny white roadside markers with cryptic distances between points. Maps for the countryside are non-existent so it’s best to ask for help from the locals.

  • Driving is on the left side of the road with speed limits posted in kilometers (km), not miles.
  • The ‘go slow’ rule may be hard to adjust to with 50 km/h (30 mph) in most areas and the national speed limit on highways ranging from 60 km/h (37 mph) to 80 km/h (50 mph).
  • Familiarise yourself with Fiji’s traffic signs to avoid surprises.
  • There are many petrol stations around Fiji’s two main islands, Viti Levu and Vanua Levu. Avoid venturing too far off the beaten track as petrol stations are harder to find in secluded, rural regions.
  • Take care while driving in Fiji as there are lots of potholes and narrow roads.
  • Avoid driving at night when visibility is low and there are many wandering pedestrians and animals.
  • Ditch the thongs and wear suitable footwear when driving.

Travel Tips

Ask Before You Drive

Car rental companies will give you a helpful ‘heads up’ on what to look for when driving – so make sure you ask on the phone, online or at the counter desk.

24Hr Service

In case of a break down, call your car rental company which should provide you with a 24hr service number – but be aware there are very few roadside emergency telephones and mobile phone reception is pretty patchy in rural areas.

Terms and Conditions

Be sure you understand your rental agreement and read the fine print! Some rental agencies require travel on paved roads only.

Be Prepared

Keep an ample supply of petrol/gas if you’re travelling to secluded or rural areas.
